SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Nov. 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Mercadona, a retail supermarket and online sales enterprise, is participating in the Great Food Collection organised by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). This initiative starts this Friday and will run until December 1, with involvement from 84 stores across the Canary Islands.

The company is offering its locations for the fundraising campaign, enabling its customers to take part in this significant annual charitable event supporting Food Banks.

Over 1,600 Mercadona locations throughout Spain will participate, and as is customary, the company’s support for the ‘Great Collection’ will be facilitated through monetary donations, in multiples of 1 euro. Customers can make these donations at the checkout, “with the assurance that 100% of the euros donated for the Food Banks will be entirely converted into products,” explains Laura Cruz, the director of Social Action at the company.

The principal benefit of cash donations is that they allow Food Banks to procure the necessary products in the quantities they require and when they need them.

This approach enables them to cater to the end beneficiaries more accurately and effectively, according to a company statement.

On behalf of Mercadona, and as in previous years, 10% of the total collection will be donated to this charitable initiative. This year, there will also be an additional commitment with a contribution of 5% to assist those impacted by the DANA.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: OVER 20,700 TONS OF FOOD DONATED

Demonstrating its commitment to vulnerable communities, Mercadona makes substantial efforts to enhance its collaboration network with social organisations. Currently, it partners with 787 entities in Spain and Portugal, providing daily donations to assist those in greatest need.

To date this year, the company has donated over 20,700 tons of food and essential items to soup kitchens, food banks, and other social organisations throughout Spain and Portugal. This contribution from the entire chain is equivalent to more than 346,000 shopping trolleys.

As part of its ongoing commitment to social organisations, Mercadona has been progressively implementing collaboration via Society Cards for several years.

This tool facilitates support for users, allowing them to use the total amount of their card at the supermarket.

“It helps to dignify the purchasing process, integrate the user, and contribute to improving their vulnerable circumstances,” explains the director of Social Action at Mercadona.

The functionality of the Mercadona Society Cards is akin to that of any other card.

They are activated with a specific amount and can be used for multiple purchases until the balance is depleted. Therefore, it is not necessary to spend the entire amount in a single transaction.
