This Thursday, Santa Cruz de Tenerife illuminated the festive season with an event hosted in the Plaza de La Candelaria, officially marking the commencement of the celebrations in the capital. Starting at 7:30 p.m., the lighting casts a glow across the city in a ceremony that has shifted its location this year, moving away from the traditional Plaza del Príncipe to enhance safety and capacity.

The occasion is part of a comprehensive Christmas programme organised by the municipal council, which features over 200 activities, including musical, cultural, and recreational events taking place throughout the area until January 6.

Christmas Illumination

This year’s lighting features the installation of over 2.2 million LED bulbs, 59,165 metres of garlands (which adds to the 16,500 metres set up last year along the Rambla de Santa Cruz), 1,638 decorative elements, 120 arches, and a total of 327 illuminated streets, amounting to an installed power of 274 kW. It’s important to note that the assembly process commenced in July, with an investment of 1,087,268.89 euros.

The Christmas illuminations of Santa Cruz are not only firmly established as one of the premier tourist attractions in the Canary Islands, but they also serve as a benchmark in terms of innovation and sustainability, thanks to the implementation of LED technology which reduces energy consumption and enhances efficiency.
