What could be a better way to kick off the cultural journey than at the TEA? On Friday, 22nd, Saturday, 23rd, and Sunday, 24th November, between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., visitors can explore the exhibition “The Two Who Cross” by Óscar Domínguez at the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA). This exhibition, dedicated to the surrealist painter, is curated by Isidro Hernández and will be accessible to the public until 24th November.
Beginning on Friday at 10:00 a.m., the TEA unveils a fresh exhibition and activity programme in the MiniTEA area. The new MiniExpo, titled “Without Clothes in the Museum: Why is Art Full of Naked People?”, showcases nineteen pieces from the TEA Collection. The exhibition, structured into four themes (A Surface of the Skin, Everything or Nothing, The Perfect Body, Majas, Venus and Odalisques, and The Broken Body), delves into diverse subjects.
This space will also feature a screening on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. of the surreal film The Island Where the Golden Age Sleeps, directed by Isabelle Dierckx. The film was created seventy years after the Tenerife Surrealist Exhibition of 1935, which exhibited seventy-six works by leading international surrealist artists to the public for a month.
The Central Municipal Library is shining a spotlight on the film genre, curating 28 films “based on true events,” alongside those that offer a personal and subjective interpretation aligning with their artistic vision. The Museum of Nature and Archeology will present the installation “Ethology in Stillness” throughout the weekend, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This installation reflects on the repercussions of human presence on the planet, framed within the confinement period of 2020 due to the pandemic.
This venue will also host the exhibition “Imeldo Serís: Everything by and for Tenerife.” This showcase, open to visitors until 24th January 2025, honours the legacy of Imeldo Serís, famed for his relentless advocacy as a deputy and senator for his native island.
This weekend, the MUNA will exhibit the interactive display “Cooperators for Life: Pollinators.” The new exhibition area at MUNA emphasises the significance of pollinators, the reasons behind their decline, and the necessity for sweeping strategies both locally and individually, aimed at cultivating a different relationship between nature and society while evaluating the social and environmental costs of developing a model with finite natural resources.
The Cultural Space of the CajaCanarias Foundation features the exhibition “Images-Words: Photographs by Carlos A. Schwartz,” available for viewing from Tuesday to Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., until the 4th of January, featuring 160 snapshots. This Friday at 8:00 p.m., acclaimed Argentine musician Inés Cuello, celebrated for her versatility and profound commitment to her craft, will perform at this venue.
Carnival is a prominent theme throughout Santa Cruz. Why not visit the Casa del Carnaval, which showcases three exhibitions dedicated to our carnival traditions? The first, titled “The Magic Behind the Costume,” explores the evolution of the Costume Contest with two illustrative examples: one from Miguel Ángel Delgado Salas, renowned for his numerous accolades in the individual costume contest and the contest’s history, while the other features the group Los Ilusionistas del Carnaval for the group costume contest. This can be seen in the Multipurpose Room from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Another exhibition, “Lírica y Tradición,” focuses on the rondallas and lyrical groups, allowing visitors to discover the history and development of these ensembles while viewing some of the competing fantasies in person. It runs at the same times as the previous exhibition in the Suspi Room.
Lastly, the permanent exhibition “2024 Carnival Prize Winners” showcases the costumes and fantasies of the 2024 Carnival, featuring designs from the three Carnival Queens along with awards won by murgas, troupes, musical groups, and choreographic performances this year. Additionally, it introduces documentary materials from Nicolás Mingorance, the esteemed lyricist of the Afilarmónica Ni Fú Ni Fá, who recently passed away. This exhibition is available for viewing on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Santa Cruz Carnival House adds two new temporary exhibitions, which can be visited for free from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day until April 2025. These exhibitions celebrate two iconic facets of our carnival, including “Between Laughter and Parties,” focused on the Laughter Song contest, and “With Clowns and Harlequins: From the Beginning to the End,” paying homage to the famous Afilarmónica Nifú Nifá.
The Los Lavaderos Art Room is currently exhibiting “El Sonar de las Islas” by musicologist Félix Morales. This exhibition aims to deepen the understanding of Canarian folklore, concentrating on its musical instruments as elements of material cultural heritage, and will be open until 30th November.
L’Incanto Espacio Cultural will present “Viagra Overdose” this Friday at 9:00 p.m. In this performance, three friends encounter absurd dilemmas when a body vanishes in the midst of a winter’s night in Madrid, leading them to devise the most improbable plans to evade a murder charge.
This venue will also host the production “Peter Pan – Never Grow Up” for younger audiences at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday at 9:00 p.m., a horror theatre piece by Crisol Carabal will be performed by students from the Crisol Carabal Acting School. Meanwhile, on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the touching theatrical-musical adaptation of “Little Women,” based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, will be staged. It is penned by Nathalia Martínez and directed by Crisol Carabal, featuring performances by the students of the Crisol Carabal Acting School.
This coming Friday, Santa Cruz will host the second edition of the Isla de Moda (IDM) festival, designed to fuse fashion with commerce, culture, leisure, and gastronomy. Set in Alameda del Duque Santa Elena, the street-level event begins at 8:00 p.m. and will be led by designer Juan Carlos Armas.
As part of the “Estudio Guimerá” initiative, a discussion titled “50 Years of the Dagoll Dagom Company and Its Relationship with the Text Mar y Cielo by Ángel Guimerá” will take place on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. This conversation will feature Joan Lluís Bozzo, a prominent Catalan director, actor, and playwright, who has been instrumental in the evolution of Dagoll Dagom since 1978; it will be moderated by Julio Hardisson Guimerá.
