Following several years of dedicated efforts by the local government (PSOE) to initiate the drafting of the project alongside numerous discussions with higher authorities seeking funding, the establishment of the paragliding track has now become a reality, enabling El Tanque to broaden its tourism offerings next year.
The facility will be constructed in the vicinity of the Lomo Molino viewpoint, on land that has remained unused for a lengthy period and was previously employed for practicing this sport in unsafe conditions, as stated by the mayor, Esther Morales, who emphasised that the site will be positioned in an area of the municipality presenting unparalleled views.
The project has recently been awarded to the company Sermarther Scon for a budget of 266,226 euros, with a timeframe for completion of six months; however, the company has proposed to reduce this to five months “as an enhancement,” according to the mayor.
The works will involve modifying the land located to the north of the viewpoint structure to ensure that paragliding takeoff activities can be carried out safely. In this regard, the mayor elaborates that the current access to the Lomo Molino building will be adapted, facilitating wheeled access to the entrance, thereby creating an accessible space for individuals with reduced mobility while also aiding the supply of products to the local eateries.
This initiative is part of the funding call for projects under the Tourism Resilience Strategy in the Canary Islands, within the action programme involving local entities in tourism infrastructure funded by the European Union, under which the municipality of El Tanque secured a grant of 297,146 euros.
By launching this track, “the vibrancy of the town and its surroundings will be enhanced, as it will complement the dining services offered at the viewpoint, introduce a new recreational option in an area with significant tourism potential, and augment the social and economic contributions that tourism makes to the municipality,” remarks Esther Morales.
