The president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila (Canarian Coalition), announced on Wednesday the agreement reached with the Ministry of Defence to purchase the Cristo barracks, located in the municipality of La Laguna, for €8.1 million, aiming to repurpose them for social and health services.
In a press briefing to discuss the Government Council’s agreements, accompanied by vice president Lope Afonso (PP), she stated that this is the “crucial step” towards finalising an operation that commenced nine months ago, stemming from a proposal first made in 2019.
The land encompasses approximately 18,500 square metres, divided into two plots—one principal plot of 17,000 square metres and a secondary plot of 1,500 square metres. The Cabildo intends to formalise the agreement with the ministry within the next 15 days.
Dávila has emphasised that a socio-health centre will be established on this land to address the “pressing need” for senior care facilities in the metropolitan area, with the project being entrusted to the Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS).
