The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, announced on Wednesday the agreement reached with the Ministry of Defence to acquire €8.1 million worth of the barracks of Christ situated in the municipality of La Laguna, with the aim of repurposing them for socio-healthcare use.
During a press conference where she presented the Government Council’s agreements alongside vice president Lope Afonso, she remarked that this represents the “crucial step” to finalise an initiative that originated nine months ago, first proposed in 2019.
The site spans approximately 18,500 square metres across two plots, with a primary plot of 17,000 square metres and a secondary one of 1,500 square metres. The Cabildo intends to formalise the agreement with the ministry within the next 15 days.
Dávila emphasised that a socio-health centre will be constructed on this land to address the “urgent need” for residential spaces for the elderly in the metropolitan area, with the project’s execution to be entrusted to the Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS).
