From today, certain traffic alterations will come into effect for the organisation and execution of the X Santa Cruz de Tenerife International Half Marathon. For this edition, it has been necessary to modify the event’s course, resulting in fewer roads being affected this coming weekend compared to previous years.
It is important to consider that the conduct of this event is currently impacted by various construction works occurring in several areas of Santa Cruz.
Nonetheless, adjustments to the city’s traffic will still be essential, primarily concerning specific parking restrictions and the closure of particular roads, some commencing this Saturday and others already in effect on Sunday.
The Local Police of the capital urges residents to adhere to the limitations indicated by the temporary signage installed on the impacted streets, as well as the directions provided by the officers present.
As in prior instances, the Port Authority road is expected to remain open to traffic on Sunday to improve circulation and accessibility between the Anaga neighbourhoods and the city centre. This measure will allow traffic to flow along said road between the Tenerife Auditorium and the Fishing Dock.
To ensure the safety and management of traffic, as well as to protect the participants and guarantee the smooth running of the competition, a significant human and technical operation has been arranged to uphold these conditions over the weekend.
Affected roads include Avenida Marítima; Francisco La Roche Avenue; Via Litoral tunnel; Constitution Avenue; the area surrounding the Regla hermitage; Fomento, Vicente Álvarez Pedreira, Adán Martín Menis, and Celia Cruz streets; additionally, a section of Manuel Hermoso Rojas Avenue; José Emilio García Gómez; Áurea Díaz Flores; and La Salle. From there, the route continues through Galcerán, Méndez Núñez, with a leg into García Sanabria, resuming the circuit towards El Pilar, Villalba Hervás, La Marina, Plaza de España, and Bravo Murillo Avenue with San Sebastián, returning towards the finish line located next to Plaza de España.
Although the two primary events will occur on Sunday, namely the Half Marathon (21 km) and the Popular Race (8.5 km), a so-called Solidarity Mile is planned for Saturday, starting at 6:00 p.m. For the longer race, it will extend to San Andrés, featuring one lane for each direction of traffic, except for a section between Valleseco and María Jiménez, where due to construction, it will be limited to northbound traffic. At that juncture, the passage of public transport will be regulated by the Local Police. All traffic from San Andrés will be redirected via Jagua along the port route.
Road closures will be enforced incrementally from 6:30 a.m., with all anticipated to be closed by 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Earlier today, from 8:00 a.m., traffic has been prohibited on the stretch of Marítima Avenue from the Island Council building to the conjunction with La Marina Street, a necessary measure to facilitate the assembly of the required infrastructure for the event. It is also crucial to note that the access and exits to the underground car park at Plaza de España will remain operational.
Approximately 70 members of the Local Police will participate in the necessary deployment for the Tenerife Marathon, with support from personnel from the capital’s Civil Protection volunteer group and approved assistants from the event’s organising team. The Advanced Command Post (PMA), from which all security and emergency resources will be coordinated, will be situated near the Island Council plaza.
One consideration is regarding the potential exit from the private garages of properties located within the confines of this event. In such scenarios, attempts will be made to assist in executing this manoeuvre, when feasible, while adhering to the instructions of the staff overseeing the event’s control functions. Maximum caution is requested during these circumstances, and strict compliance with the directives given at all times is necessary.
Parking Restrictions
From 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, parking will be banned on Marítima Avenue, from Plaza de España to La Marina Street. This prohibition will chronologically extend from 10:00 p.m. on Saturday to the area surrounding the Regla hermitage and Vicente Álvarez Pedreira and Celia Cruz streets.
Starting at 00:00 on Sunday, parking restrictions will expand to many more areas of the city: the entire Francisco La Roche Avenue, including the surface lane; the section of La Marina street from La Candelaria square to Villalba Hervás; Anaga Avenue in the parking zone adjacent to Los Charcos de Valleseco; additionally, in that neighbourhood adjacent to the fuel storage tanks; the whole area surrounding Plaza del Cabildo; and Avenida Marítima, extending to the intersection with Avenida San Sebastián.
