SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 14 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Councillor for Security and Emergencies of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, Gladis de León, issued a municipal decree this Thursday indicating that she will temporarily relinquish her responsibilities until her legal circumstances are clarified. The current leader of the Santa Cruz Civil Protection Volunteer Group, Santiago Carlos Martín, was arrested on Wednesday by the National Police in an operation that remains under judicial secrecy.
Additionally, in light of his absence during this period and to ensure that the regular functions of this group are not disrupted, it has been arranged for the current deputy head of the group to take over these responsibilities, as stipulated in the regulations that have governed its operation since January.
The councillor has also pointed out that this decision is based on the formal lack of knowledge the council currently possesses regarding his arrest, which has been corroborated by media reports from the National Police.
De León emphasises in a statement the “utmost institutional respect” for both the presumption of innocence of the detainee and the judicial secrecy that applies to these proceedings.
Moreover, the Santa Cruz City Council is ready to assist the judicial authority with any inquiries that may arise to elucidate the matter in its entirety.
