SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9th Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Socialist Group of Gomera (ASG) plans to utilise the upcoming Government control session in the Parliament of the Canary Islands next week to inquire about the lessons learned from the flooding that occurred on the Peninsula due to DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), along with the responses from European and national authorities regarding the substantial influx of migrants arriving on the shores of the Canary Islands during the first weekend of November (a total of 1,893), and the tragic loss of 55 lives at sea.
During the plenary meeting set for the 12th and 13th of November, the ASG’s parliamentary spokesperson, Casimiro Curbelo, will present to the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, the notion that “the recent floods, which have been attributed to one of the deadliest environmental catastrophes in our history, impart significant lessons that could be essential for the islands in terms of risk prevention and management concerning extreme weather events.
In this context, he will emphasise that “these lessons can steer us towards better preparation, prevention, and response to future floods or climatic disasters within the archipelago.”
Casimiro Curbelo will also communicate to the Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children, and Families, Candelaria Delgado, that “we must not allow ourselves to become desensitised to the news or the figures regarding the individuals arriving on our shores, as the reality indicates that this year, with 35,354 migrants arriving on the islands thus far, that is over 4,000 more than last year, we are on track to surpass the previous record for migrants reaching the islands, which stood at 39,910 individuals last year.”
In light of the new political landscape in Spain, he will inquire whether there has been any advancement concerning the immigration requests that the Canary Islands have been advocating for throughout the year and what response has been provided by European and national authorities regarding the alarming increase in arrivals to the islands during the final two months of the year.
In the aforementioned plenary session, the Group’s deputy spokesperson, Jesús Ramos, will request updates from the Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice, and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto, regarding the progress being made in promoting the stabilisation processes for public employees.
