The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council continues to affirm its dedication to the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage through the introduction of new heritage trails aimed at locals. These trails, designed to rediscover the extensive history and traditions of the city, debuted last Saturday, November 2, with the route “Roads of Death along the Shores of San Andrés”, guiding participants through the historical essence of the charming coastal area of San Andrés.

The Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasises the significance of these initiatives as a means to enhance a sense of belonging and engage residents with the city’s cultural legacy. “Santa Cruz de Tenerife possesses a distinctive history, enriched with traditions, monuments, and narratives that have defined our identity. These routes present an opportunity for the community to rediscover the city, reconnect with its past, and, most importantly, recognise the value of our heritage,” remarks Bermúdez.

The routes will carry on throughout November, featuring itineraries that showcase historically significant international outdoor sculpture exhibitions. One of the most awaited routes will focus on the Defensive System of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which on November 16 will take attendees through the fortifications and bastions that have shielded the city over centuries, from the British assaults of the 17th century to modern times.

Scheduled routes

On November 9, the “Sculpture on Street I” route (Parque García Sanabria) and “Sculpture on Street II” (Rambla de Santa Cruz) will take place, as part of projects selected from the Participatory Budgets. On November 16, participants can join the tour “A tour of the defensive system of Santa Cruz de Tenerife” (Plaza de España). November 23 will feature the route “The name of our streets, an insight into the history of Santa Cruz” (Plaza Weyler), while on November 30, the routes “Religious heritage in Santa Cruz de Tenerife” (Iglesia de la Concepción) and “Water in Santa Cruz de Tenerife” (Plaza de España) will be available.

With increasing engagement and the possibility to explore the most genuine aspects of Santa Cruz, these heritage routes are establishing themselves as a significant cultural offering that links the city’s history with its contemporary narrative.
