Tenerife Sees Third Police Arrested for Pocketing Tourist Fine Revenue

The Civil Guard has apprehended a third officer from the Local Police of Buenavista del Norte (Tenerife), who allegedly retained funds from traffic penalties levied on international tourists.

Prior to this, two other officers were arrested concerning these same incidents and were placed in provisional custody last September on charges of misappropriating public funds.

This third individual, part of Operation Martyr, is currently on assignment in a different municipality, as indicated by sources from the armed forces.

The inquiry has been conducted by the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police (UOPJ) of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command, which, after scrutinising the documentation and items initially confiscated, apprehended this third individual believed to have been involved in the same offences.

The investigation is being coordinated by the Judicial Authority alongside the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

During the initial stage of the operation last September, the Civil Guard executed multiple searches, recovering a substantial amount of documentation that would substantiate this unlawful activity, which has reportedly been ongoing for several years.

Furthermore, several tens of thousands of euros were confiscated, alongside hundreds of complaint forms issued to foreign individuals that had not been processed, as well as other items relating to the crimes under investigation.
