The Anaga massif donned its traditional attire yesterday to honour the fourth edition of the Anaga Biofest Festival, an occasion that concluded with a final weekend brimming with events held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and various locations associated with the Biosphere Reserve.
This year, the Anaga Biofest has been marked by several notable achievements, particularly the partnership established with the Biosphere Reserves of Gran Canaria and El Hierro. These initiatives have not only encouraged cultural exchange and the revitalisation of traditional crafts, such as wool weaving and the reintroduction of linen, but have also bolstered connections between the islands concerning the conservation of their ethnographic and natural heritage.
On its concluding day, the peaks of Anaga were once again adorned with vibrant colours and the essence of a festival. Residents from various communities engaged in the activities arranged for the occasion, which included guided tours, basketry displays, and an ethnographic immersion in Roque Negro, aimed at showcasing the significance of traditional agriculture in local life. Gastronomy contests highlighted the local produce, particularly the sweet potato and the borella potato, which took centre stage in a plethora of delectable recipes. Residents of Roque Negro and Benijos enthusiastically contributed to this edition of Anaga Biofest, stating, “It was a very heartwarming day among locals and visitors, with performances from the Sabinas area of Anaga, where the delights of our land were prominent.”
Following a busy schedule of events that began last Thursday, the festival came to a close yesterday at the Espacio Mutua Tinerfeña (La Laguna), coinciding with the International Day of Biosphere Reserves. On this day, Anaga was also presented ‘Yesterday and Tomorrow’, an electroacoustic audiovisual piece that illustrates a journey through the past of Anaga and the future that lies ahead, including the present.
