Following the Popular Party’s alert regarding the spread of flying termites in historic properties and structures in the town of La Laguna, the City Council affirms it has not been informed of any official notice or request for information from residents.
Nevertheless, following a preliminary examination conducted this Monday at the Leal Theatre, municipal sources report that only signs have been found on an external door, which was scheduled for removal due to its age and extent of moisture exposure.
Regardless, the historic centre unit will conduct a more comprehensive evaluation of the theatre, and a review has been requested from specialists at the Cabildo de Tenerife.
Residents can report issues
The council reminds the public that a pest control service is available for public areas, overseen by the Environment Department. This service has a notification system (via email [email protected]), enabling citizens to report sightings of such pests in streets and public areas. Furthermore, guidance is offered to individuals who seek advice on how to handle these situations.
La Laguna is also included in the subterranean termite eradication programme for reticulitermes flavipes, an invasive species deemed hazardous, which has been identified in Valle de Guerra and regions in the northeast. This initiative is managed by Tragsatec and led by the Government of the Canary Islands along with the Cabildo of Tenerife. Efforts have been ongoing since 2019, when training was provided to personnel across various sectors, including Urban Planning and the Historic Centre service.
