The security and emergency services, including firefighters and the Local Police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, collaborated with Public Services technicians on Thursday morning to remove a fallen tree, specifically a ficus, located on Avenida 25 de Julio, near number 10.
The tree collapsed last night at approximately 11:30 p.m., at a time when there were no pedestrians in the vicinity, so there were no incidents to report. Initially, the branches that obstructed the roadway were cleared, followed by the remainder of the tree in the morning.
Following the completion of the tree removal, traffic flow has been reinstated in one of the two lanes of this significant thoroughfare.
The tree appeared to be in good condition externally. Samples have been collected and are currently being analysed by Public Services technicians and Parks and Gardens personnel to identify the precise cause of the collapse.
The municipal technicians performed an initial assessment of the trees in the area and found that another tree was in a deteriorated state. Consequently, they proceeded to fell it at number 18 of the aforementioned Avenida 25 de Julio.
A study conducted by the national company Tree Research and Management, commissioned by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council to evaluate the condition of the capital’s tree population following the collapse of multiple specimens in a brief period, found that the municipality does not pose a significant risk of tree falls. However, it did recommend that the tree population requires “more extensive and improved maintenance.”
It is important to note that this study was initiated after the recent falls of several trees affected by the fungi Inonotus rickii and Ganoderma lucidum.
