The Cabildo has procured a collection of portable Tetra radio stations, a communication system that operates independently of traditional networks, thereby strengthening emergency response capabilities and their management through the Island Operation Coordination Centre (Cecopin).
The portable radio stations, for which an investment of 12,000 euros has been made, provide a vital communication line for other systems that facilitate the flow of information between Cecopin and the operational commands and action groups involved during emergencies or incidents. Furthermore, they will aid in the efficient management of other human resources outlined in civil protection plans, encompassing logistics, health, and safety, amongst others.
The Minister of Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, noted that, “following the 2023 fire, the necessity for Cecopin to act as a manager in extraordinary emergencies was established, thus highlighting the importance of communication and the need to enhance these systems for future incident coordination. This can significantly impact the efficacy and speed of interventions.”
Additionally, the insular director of Security, Iván Martín, remarked that “during natural disasters such as fires, floods, or even volcanic eruptions, conventional communication networks risk collapsing or becoming unavailable, whereas the Tetra systems remain operational, ensuring the functionality of emergency teams.”
