The City Council intends to formally request an explanation from the electricity provider regarding the demise of a dog this morning while traversing one of the manhole covers operated by Endesa, situated on San Vicente Ferrer Street.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council insists that Endesa, the company responsible for the upkeep of the electrical networks in the area, conduct an immediate inspection of all related facilities following the death of a dog this morning on Calle San Vicente Ferrer. The incident occurred when the pet stepped over a manhole located on the street in question, prompting the City Council to demand that the electricity provider clarify the circumstances surrounding this occurrence, as the maintenance of these facilities falls solely under Endesa’s remit.
The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, has called for a prompt response from the electricity provider, stating, “This situation has arisen due to the apparent negligent maintenance of these installations beneath our city’s surface.” The mayor is adamant about this matter, asserting, “The safety of our residents and their pets, such as in this unfortunate case, is paramount over any other excuses that Endesa might present. We therefore insist on an immediate review of all the aforementioned facilities.”
Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Animal Welfare, expressed his sorrow regarding the loss of the pet, echoing the mayor’s demands for prompt explanations from Endesa and insisting on “an immediate review of the facilities.”
Meanwhile, district councillor Purificación Dávila conveyed her condolences regarding the animal’s death, stating, “We extend our sympathies to the owner and offer our support during this distressing time,” and further added, “We will seek an explanation from the company and clarify the responsibilities related to this incident.”
The sequence of events began with a call to the emergency number 092 about a missing dog on San Vicente Ferrer Street when it crossed a cover belonging to Endesa on the pavement. In response, the Local Police notified CETRA-Cecopal to locate a representative from the electricity provider, inform them of the situation, and request the attendance of their technical staff at the scene. The first officers to arrive confirmed the unfortunate demise of the animal and noted that smoke was emanating from the manhole cover.
In accordance with protocol, the dog’s owner and several witnesses were identified. As developments unfolded, personnel from the electricity provider arrived to manage the situation, marking the area accordingly.
The capital’s council is implementing measures to investigate the tragic incident and ensure the safety of residents and their pets in light of this morning’s events on San Vicente Ferrer Street.
