The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, examined the key road projects affecting the municipality of La Laguna this Tuesday. This includes the third lane on the TF-5 motorway between Guamasa and the Airport, heading downhill, as well as the La Laguna Ring Road.
In the meeting headed by Clavijo, Manuel Domínguez, the vice president of the Canary Islands Executive, and Pablo Rodríguez, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, were present alongside Rosa Dávila, the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, and Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, the mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. They discussed the mobility challenges in this region of the Island.
Clavijo underscored the necessity for the three administrations—the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Council, and the La Laguna City Council—to prioritise the ongoing works on the section of the TF-5 between Guamasa and the Airport, something to which they have pledged, stating that “it will significantly enhance mobility by increasing the capacity of the Northern Motorway, in the direction of Santa Cruz, from Guamasa to Los Rodeos Airport.”
He also noted that other crucial initiatives were discussed, such as the La Laguna bypass, which is expected to be one of the largest undertakings, not just on Tenerife but across the entire Canary Islands.
Pablo Rodríguez advocated for accelerating the third lane project on the TF-5 section. “Our Ministry is finalising the expansion of the variant between Guamasa and the Airport, with environmental impact approval already achieved, which will allow us to tender within the framework of this highway agreement that we are executing.”
He highlighted that the project, estimated at around 60 million euros, “will not only represent a significant advancement in road infrastructure but will also improve mobility by increasing the highway’s capacity.”
Rosa Dávila emphasised the significance of both the third lane expansion and the bypass as essential projects to enhance traffic flow on the TF-5 and provide an effective resolution to congestion in La Laguna.
“Simultaneously, we are progressing on the ring road, a large-scale undertaking that will be constructed in a tunnel, with an investment of 500 million euros, which will help us towards the definitive closure of the Island Ring,” she remarked.
Additionally, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez highlighted “the allocation of 50 million euros for the tendering of the Gorgolana tunnel by the Cabildo and executed by the Government, along with the 60 million euros for the third lane of the TF-5, from Los Rodeos to Guamasa, “which aims to resolve one of the most congested points in the municipality.”
“When discussing mobility in Tenerife, the main unresolved issues are the northern closure of the island ring and the metropolitan area’s challenges, primarily during the entry and exit from La Laguna,” he added, evaluating the Government’s projected budget of 2.5 million euros “for the various steps in the tender for the TF-5 variant and to facilitate burial as it passes through the municipality.”
In conclusion, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez expressed gratitude to the Government of the Canary Islands for its contribution of over 1,200,000 euros and an additional 500,000 euros from the Cabildo to support the 25th anniversary of La Laguna as a World Heritage City.
The representatives from the three administrations also addressed various housing issues, reaffirming the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands’ commitment to the municipality of La Laguna, which has made all available municipally owned land accessible to the Government through Icavi and Visocan.
