SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29 Oct (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has insisted that Endesa, the company responsible for maintaining the electrical networks within the municipality, conduct an urgent inspection of all such facilities following the incident this morning involving the death of a dog while walking along San Vicente Ferrer Street.
This tragic event occurred when the animal traversed a manhole cover situated on the aforementioned street. Consequently, the City Council is requesting that the electricity provider clarify to the public what transpired in this instance since the upkeep of these installations falls solely within Endesa’s responsibilities.
José Manuel Bermúdez, the mayor of Santa Cruz, has called for “an immediate response to the situation that has arisen due to what appears to be inadequate maintenance of these installations within our city’s infrastructure.”
The mayor is emphatic regarding this matter: “The safety of our residents, including their pets, as demonstrated in this incident, is paramount and takes precedence over any other considerations that Endesa might put forward, which is why we demand an immediate review of all the affected facilities.”
Carlos Tarife, the Councillor for Animal Welfare, expressed his sorrow over the loss of the animal, echoing the mayor’s call for urgent explanations from Endesa regarding the incident, as well as an “immediate inspection of the facilities.”
Additionally, district councillor Purificación Dávila extended her condolences to the pet’s owner and expressed her willingness to support them during this difficult time. She also noted that they would seek “a response from the company, as well as clarification of responsibilities regarding this incident.”
The sequence of events began with a call to 092 reporting the disappearance of a dog on San Vicente Ferrer Street when it walked over a cover belonging to Endesa on the pavement. Immediately, the Local Police alerted CETRA-Cecopal to locate a representative from the electrical company, communicate the incident, and request the presence of technical staff at the site. Upon arrival, the first officers on the scene confirmed the death of the animal and noted that smoke was emanating from the manhole cover.
Following established procedures, the dog’s owner and several witnesses were identified. As developments unfolded, personnel from the electrical company arrived and started to manage the incident while cordoning off the area.
The city council is implementing measures to investigate the tragic incident thoroughly and ensure the safety of residents and their pets after the occurrences earlier today on San Vicente Ferrer Street.
