On the previous Friday, the Granadilla de Abona Town Council initiated an emergency project aimed at enhancing the provision of potable water in the communities of Los Abrigos, La Mareta, and Sotavento. A team from the Granada Town Council visited the Casablanca region, where the construction will commence, accompanied by local technicians and the water supply service team, including the mayor, Jennifer Miranda, along with the councillor for Municipal Public Works and Services, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez.
This initiative, with a budget of approximately 450,000 euros, involves the replacement of a four-kilometre stretch of piping that runs through Casablanca, Sotavento, and La Mareta, eventually reaching Los Abrigos.
According to the municipal authorities, the existing infrastructure is significantly deteriorated due to its age and the effects of the desalination facility that provides the water, which has a high alkalinity level. This chemical component has resulted in an accumulation of iron, evident in the brown hue of the water, leading to complaints from residents.
During the signing ceremony, Miranda clarified that the initiative was declared an emergency during an extraordinary plenary session, highlighting that its priority is to resolve a public health issue concerning the water quality consumed by local residents for many years. The current infrastructure, installed over 35 years ago, has far surpassed its intended lifespan, creating structural hazards that could result in severe complications if not addressed promptly. Miranda emphasised that this project will not only enhance water quality but also signifies a long-term investment in the reliability of the service.
Follow-up
Additionally, it was announced that the establishment of two alternative supply points has been planned in Sotavento and Los Abrigos, which will operate continuously throughout the duration of the work. These points are intended to meet the water demand in these areas temporarily, ensuring that the supply to residences remains uninterrupted.
Finally, the Town Council reaffirmed its commitment to closely oversee the execution of the work to guarantee that the established timelines and anticipated quality standards are upheld.
