The existing socioeconomic climate and the action strategy for the areas of San Matías, La Cuesta, Las Chumberas and los Andenes will be the focal point of discussion during the sixth event organised by the Economic and Social Forum (FES) of La Laguna, in partnership with the University of La Laguna. This will occur on Wednesday at the Pérez Soto Citizen Centre in El Cardonal. Registration is complimentary and can be completed via email at fes@lalaguna.es.

This initiative is driven by the concern of La Laguna’s mayor and president of the FES, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, due to statistics that highlight these neighbourhoods as areas requiring special attention within the Archipelago, as communicated by the local authority. “We need to undertake a realistic and thorough assessment of the circumstances in these areas, their deficiencies and potentials, in collaboration with the University, and propose solutions to help ameliorate this situation and enhance the living standards of our residents,” the local councillor declared.
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez will inaugurate the day, commencing at 5:00 p.m., followed by the initial presentation from Professor José Antonio Nieto Calmaestra, a Geography graduate from the University of Granada and a technical advisor for Territorial Planning at the Andalusian Government, who will showcase how challenges in these neighbourhoods have been tackled within that autonomous community.

At 6:00 p.m., a panel discussion will take place featuring contributions from the Housing Councillor and director of Urban Planning Management for La Laguna, Adolfo Cordobés, the president of the Canary Islands Association of Real Estate Management Companies, Rafael Tarajano, along with José Antonio Nieto Calmaestra. This session will be moderated by ULL professor Eduardo Parra.

Report

Following this panel, the ULL writing team, consisting of Eduardo Parra and the University Institute of Social Research and Tourism professors Ana María Barrera Martínez and Iván Medina Jiménez, will present the findings of the report titled Analysis of the Socioeconomic Situation and Action Plan (San Matías, La Cuesta, Las Chumberas and los Andenes). This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the housing market, the socioeconomic implications for these neighbourhoods, and the public policies required to enhance the quality of life within these urban settings.
