“We are not going to don the Superman cape or any flag because that is not our role; we are merely seeking a way for Giuv and Abdoulie to complete their studies at IES La Guancha,” states the head of the educational institution, Rubén Gallo. He also emphasises that “the educators are neither being dismissive nor patronising towards these two unaccompanied migrant youths; I would act the same way for any other minor who, due to various circumstances, has been compelled to leave the centre.”

The two young individuals arrived in the Canary Islands by boat from Gambia and Senegal and commenced their education at IES La Guancha-Jerónimo Morales Barroso last year. Presently, they are in their second year of Basic Vocational Training in Administrative Services and have assimilated into the life of the centre. Moreover, the director highlights their daily efforts, despite the challenges they face related to language and personal circumstances.
However, on November 20, they will both reach adulthood and will be required to leave their academic programme and the supportive accommodation they currently reside in, which is operated by an NGO. This has created a social dilemma that the educators are attempting to address in an educational context.
Alongside appealing for the collaboration of institutions and NGOs, the teachers at IES La Guancha convened yesterday to devise alternatives that would enable Giuv and Abdoulie to remain at the centre. “All the teachers are individually seeking solutions, rather than as a collective, although there are numerous specific concerns working towards the same objective,” remarks Rubén Gallo with pride.

The centre collaborates closely with the young men’s tutors “as these youngsters have two points of reference: the educational institution and the supervised accommodation, thus we must work together,” explains the director.
