The president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, has refuted claims this Wednesday that the corporation plans to approve a credit adjustment of €1.2 million to bring the ‘Esland Awards’, promoted by the YouTuber TheGrefg, to the island. Instead, the figure has been reduced to €300,000 and is now linked to a training forum focused on new technologies and entrepreneurship.
During a press conference to discuss the decisions of the Government Council, he remarked that Tenerife has not yet been chosen as the host for the awards and is actually “competing” against major cities like Madrid, Malaga, and several in Latin America.
He asserted that “it is not accurate” what the PSOE claimed days ago, accusing them of “failing to understand” the documentation and of “sabotaging” significant events on the island due to their “lack of foresight.”
Dávila pointed out that the ‘Esland Awards’ represent “the largest event in Spanish for the streaming, video game, and e-sports sector,” amassing over 600 million views. “I can understand why the Socialist Party would be aggrieved by this,” he remarked.
In this context, he emphasised that the awards are an “entirely private” competition, and any potential involvement from the Cabildo would be linked to the hosting of a forum aimed at the training of young individuals.
He also highlighted that private investment is expected to be around €1.5 million, with the organiser believing that Tenerife “is an excellent location” for this event, noting that typically, the return on investment is five times greater.
The president has taken aim at the PSOE’s “petty attitudes” for opposing such gatherings and has sarcastically noted that the finals of the ‘Kings League’ will not be held in Tenerife simply because Piqué “is unpopular” or that Spain will not compete in the Heliodoro “due to dissatisfaction with a player or his performance.”
Dávila has championed the Cabildo’s dedication to new technologies and video games and contrasted this with the PSOE model that “destroyed” the TLP. “It reflects where the direction had led and the stagnation faced by our island, Tenerife,” he added.
