SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 23 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Tenerife Council, Lope Afonso, expressed his discontent this Wednesday towards the “absolute irresponsibility” exhibited by the protesters of the ‘Canary Islands have a limit’ movement, who chose to demonstrate at Troya beach in front of tourists.
In a press briefing to discuss the agreements made by the Government Council, he described the encounter with tourists as “abrupt” – despite photographs that depict a level of understanding and dialogue between them and the protesters – which has generated some “concern” regarding the image the island might project internationally.
Afonso called into question “the manner” in which the movement has opted to convey its demands, which he respects, noting the “repercussions” detected in several foreign countries, many of which are markets that send tourists to the island.
“Naturally, this is not news that contributes positively to the maintenance of the solid reputation our destination has generally held in those markets. Consequently, we are actively endeavouring to present a portrayal that aligns more closely with the reality of what occurs in Tenerife through data and objective information,” he emphasised.
The Vice President views it as “legitimate” that some individuals “disagree” with one interpretation of the economic activity generated by tourism and reasserted his support for the “review” process commenced by the Council, aimed at enhancing sustainability and increasing expenditure levels to lessen dependence on tourist arrival volumes.
“This ongoing process, which is evidently supported by various sectors, requires time to be recognised,” he remarked.
In this vein, he stated that “a tourism model cannot be transformed from April to October, nor in six months, and certainly not within one or two years,” as it is a “complex process” that is “aligned” with both public and private initiatives. “I am confident that we will achieve this,” he asserted.
According to Afonso, “this strategy will not be disrupted by any demonstration or abrupt or aggressive actions; however, it is essential for us to convey our rejection of behaviours that do not align with the values of the vast majority of residents.”
