Two wines from Tenerife and one from Ciudad Real, alongside a wine produced in the San Javier de Loncomilla region in Chile, have received the prestigious Great Gold medal at the inaugural International edition of the Volcanic Wines awards, organised by the Wine Connection platform.
Lagynos, crafted by the Reconquista wineries, which is part of the Denomination of Origin (DO) Campo de Calatrava in Ciudad Real, was rated most highly by the jury with an impressive score of 96 points, as announced by the contest organisers this Monday.
The Flor de Chasna white Marmajuelo Premium wines produced by Cumbres de Abona winery, from the DO Abona in Tenerife, also received accolades, achieving a score of 95 points, matching that of the Marba red barrel wine from Bodegas Marba, which hails from the DO Tacoronte-Acentejo in Tenerife. Additionally, the Parinacota wine from the Volcanes de Chile winery, created in the Maule valley in Chile, received the same score.
The competition also awarded five gold medals, six silver medals, and one bronze medal to other wines from Spain, Italy, Hungary, and Portugal.
The International Volcanic Wine Awards seeks to promote and celebrate wines produced in volcanic regions across the globe, which possess distinctive qualities and are increasingly sought after by consumers as their profiles become more widely recognised.
During the tasting event held in Ciudad Real, situated in the Calatrava Volcanoes Geopark, wines from six countries and thirty different designations of origin competed for awards.
