DA/Efe.| The renovation works at the Plaza de la Patrona in the municipality of Candelaria are set to commence in the latter half of December, as reported this Monday by the Tenerife Council. This refurbishment, which will also impact the promenade and its vicinity, involves an investment of 16.2 million euros, with completion anticipated within a period of 36 months.
The initiative will encompass an area of approximately 20,000 square metres and will be executed in three distinct phases. The initial phase will focus on the promenade (3,431 m²), followed by the second phase affecting the Patron Square (13,640 m²), and concluding with the third phase in the Artisans Square (2,354 m²).
The island’s president, Rosa Davila, emphasised the significance of this project, describing it as “essential and symbolic for Tenerife and the municipality of Candelaria”, as it is associated with the Basilica of Candelaria, a Cultural Heritage Site and a place of worship that draws both tourists and pilgrims who pay homage to the Virgin of Candelaria.
Project specifics
The proposal also includes enhancements to the hydraulic pipelines and sewage systems in the area. Moreover, a building ramp exceeding 1,000 m² will be constructed, which will house a sacred museum, a multifunctional room, and a tourist office. The expansive plaza and the San Blas walkway will be repaved alongside the Camel Cave. Additionally, Anton Guanche street will be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly linear open space.
This development, coordinated by the Cabildo of Tenerife, the Candelaria City Council, and the Island Water Council, will preserve historical features such as the pilgrims’ fountain and the sculptural ensemble of the guanches by the sea.
The mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, has requested understanding from residents and shopkeepers, acknowledging that the construction works will impact daily routines, and has highlighted the necessity for Monitoring Committees to address concerns regarding mobility and parking.
