SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 11th Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of the Canary Islands has announced a pre-alert situation for winds affecting the summits of Tenerife, particularly around Teide National Park, and La Palma, at elevations above 1,600 metres, commencing at 7:00 p.m. today (Friday). Residents are advised to refrain from travelling through these regions to mitigate risks until the weather conditions improve.
This declaration is based on data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other relevant sources, in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands due to Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Forecasts indicate strong westerly winds, with average speeds between 40 – 70 kilometres per hour, with the highest strength anticipated in El Teide, and potential very strong gusts exceeding 70 – 90 kilometres per hour.
Additionally, it should be noted that the pre-alert situation for coastal phenomena remains in effect for the shores of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.
In light of this situation, it is advised to avoid hiking or participating in excursions or camping in these areas until conditions return to normal. Road trips should also be postponed, and if undertaken, it is essential to check their status and take extra precautions regarding potential blockages on the roads.
Concerning the rough sea conditions, the Government of the Canary Islands emphasizes the necessity of following self-protection guidelines to prevent risks and accidents along the affected coastal areas.
It is advisable to avoid remaining on docks and breakwaters or in close proximity to the sea to reduce the risk of being struck or swept away by waves. Additionally, it is recommended to postpone any planned nautical or sporting activities for the coming days and to steer clear of swimming at deserted or unsupervised beaches.
Furthermore, it is recommended to avoid capturing photographs or videos near areas where waves are crashing.
