Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the primary location for the XVIII International Clownbaret Festival, commences today, Friday, 11 October, with an extensive agenda featuring over 30 performances in the streets, at Plaza del Príncipe, and Plaza Isla de la Madera, all accessible to the public at no charge.
The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, remarks that “the comedic spirit of the clown will envelop the city from this afternoon until Sunday, providing a cultural offering filled with humour and undoubtedly an opportunity for families to enjoy the weekend together.”
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Culture, Santiago Díaz Mejías, highlights that “the Santa Cruz City Council, through the Autonomous Organisation of Culture, consistently supports this form of artistic expression, which maintains a pedagogical aspect, placing humour at its forefront, and often serves to foster a critical mindset.”
Programme
From Friday, 11th to Sunday, 13th, in the central Plaza del Príncipe, five international performers—Allez Allez (Belgium), Les Goulus (France), Anatoli Akerman (Austria), Quand les Moules Auront des Dent (France), and Les Bleus de Travail (France)—will join national talents Yiyolo Stratto, Jessica Arpin, Cia. D’estro, Agustina Castro, and the newly established inclusive local troupe, Satélite Teatro. All shows will be introduced by José Luis Redondo, who will act as the master of ceremonies with his performances involving balance and instability on glass bottles, object manipulation, and a mix of dexterity and clumsiness.
In the Plaza Isla de la Madera, on Friday, 11 October at 9:30 p.m. and on Saturday, 12 October at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the performance “Poi” by Cía. D’es Tro will take place. This circus company has engaged in extensive work and research into all the traditional elements of circus, including balls, clubs, unicycles, and knife throwing, among others. They integrate these props into their creations along with the fusion of contemporary practices and new disciplines.
