SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 11 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of Tenerife, through the area of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, has introduced a new edition of the educational and awareness initiative ‘With the mountain I do not neglect’, designed to educate and raise awareness among over 4,500 schoolchildren across the island regarding the prevention and extinguishment of forest fires.
This endeavour, which has become a cornerstone of environmental education in Tenerife, involves the participation of approximately twenty educational establishments that, year after year, contribute to this vital effort to safeguard the island’s natural surroundings.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, emphasised the significance of this programme as a crucial instrument to inspire a shift in attitude from a young age: “With the mountains I do not neglect it, is much more than just a slogan. It embodies a commitment we wish to convey to future generations, so they recognise that the protection of our mountains relies not solely on government bodies, but on each one of us.”
Furthermore, the Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, underscored the beneficial effects that such initiatives have on the entire educational community, including both students and educators: “Early education is essential for children and youths to develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment and to become proactive participants in fire prevention. Our aim is for them to realise how their actions can create a significant impact and prevent disasters like the one we faced last year with the major fire that affected the island.”
Blanca Pérez highlighted that this educational and training plan “is intended for institutions on the Island, whether Primary, Secondary or High School, which will have access to informative and training resources, along with workshops and awareness sessions about their influence on the land. It stands as one of the most vital programmes that are part of the network of plans managed by our department in relation to environmental education.”
REGISTRATION PERIOD AND CONTACT
The application period for participation in the programme will be open from October 14 to 18 for institutions that were on the waiting list during the previous edition, and from October 28 to November 8 for those that did not take part in the earlier course.
Interested parties can reach out to the Environmental Education Unit of the Cabildo by calling 922239157 or emailing eduam@tenerife.es. As a reminder, the institutions that participated during the 23/24 academic year will not be eligible to apply this year.
With this initiative, the “Cabildo of Tenerife continues to strengthen its commitment to the safeguarding of the natural environment and the prevention of forest fires, prioritising education and awareness as the most effective strategies to ensure a safer and more sustainable future for the island,” asserts the Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies.
