SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The deputy president and tourism advisor of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Lope Afonso (PP), has criticised this Wednesday the “speed” at which the Minister of Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, has intervened in the process for declaring the ‘monument to Franco’ an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), while failing to address the migration crisis affecting the Canary Islands.
“I agree that it is the Minister of Democratic Memory’s responsibility to be involved in this matter; however, I find it rather striking,” he remarked during a press conference to discuss the decisions made by the Government Council.
In this context, he expressed that, regarding immigration, the minister has not adhered to the “formalities” that “he seems keen to observe now,” as he notably attempted to engage in discussions with the PP “via WhatsApp,” leaving Afonso uncertain if immigration is indeed a “genuine priority.”
Afonso pointed out that the central government “has already declared its unwillingness to utilise the community aid that has been available for a considerable period,” yet “it continues to foster divisions.”
Furthermore, he remarked that it would be beneficial if the minister possessed “memory” rather than relying on his parliamentary group to protect a bill that, while supposedly aiming to adapt a community provision concerning the exchange of criminal record information, could potentially lead to the disgrace of releasing several terrorists prematurely.
“We must also retain our memory in this context, as it constitutes democratic memory, and furthermore, it is a very recent history. Please do not overlook it,” he asserted.
