The La Laguna City Council, via the Municipal Services Department, has finalised the development of a medicinal garden within the inner courtyard of the ‘Adrián Alemán de Armas’ Library, located in the city’s historic centre. The landscaping project commenced last summer, aimed at rejuvenating this iconic area by integrating elements of local biodiversity with the historical and cultural significance of the building.

Fran Hernández, the area’s mayor, remarked during his visit to assess the completed work that “the enhancement of the garden serves not only an aesthetic purpose but also aims to honour the extensive history of the property, which was formerly the Los Dolores hospital, a structure that dates back to 1515 and has been designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1986.”

Among the varieties planted are specimens of bitter orange, tarragon, Canary saffron, coffee, plantain, santolina, and dandelion, among others. These were “carefully selected for their visual appeal and fragrance, as well as their links to the natural medicine of the Canary Islands, providing a touch of authenticity given that many were used during the hospital’s operational period. This creates an additional allure, inviting contemplation for those who frequent the library and the daily visitors to this area,” Hernández added.

During the renovation, a new irrigation system was installed, tailored to meet the different requirements of the plants, ensuring their appropriate growth and upkeep. Additionally, treated pine beams for outdoor use have been incorporated, all while preserving the historical features of the property.
