The sixteenth edition of Plenilunio commenced yesterday at 8:30 p.m. on the waterfront promenade with a spectacular display involving over 220 drones, followed by a concert by the Tenerife Philharmonic Orchestra in the Plaza de La Candelaria. Attendees marvelled at aerial designs including shells, stars, and seahorses, culminating in the drones creating emblematic shapes such as the city’s hearts, iconic landmarks like the Auditorium, and the Plenilunio logo in the night sky.

After the drone exhibition concluded, the Tenerife Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of José Antonio Cubas and featuring soloists Antonella Vega and Altahay de la Guardia, began a concert in the Plaza de La Candelaria that enchanted the audience. They performed well-known pieces such as Chariots of Fire, More Than You Know, Played Alive (The Bongo Song), Pirates of the Caribbean, and One More Time.

“This marks the beginning of a weekend filled with a diverse programme of cultural and musical activities across various venues in the municipality,” stated the Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, who also remarked that “with this fusion of music and technology, we aimed to initiate an event that is increasingly gaining recognition both within and beyond our municipality.”

Carmen Pérez, CEO of the Development Society, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “The sixteenth edition of Plenilunio has kicked off with an event where all attendees could experience the integration of technology and music to herald the more than one hundred activities we have scheduled for this weekend.” She further mentioned, “We are thrilled with the positive reception this evening’s show has received, and we believe this is merely the beginning of a weekend that is anticipated to be as busy, if not busier, than years past.”

Proposals in TEA and Museums

Complementing the opening ceremony, the Museum of Nature and Archeology (MUNA) extended its operational hours until 9:00 p.m. and provided three guided tours that specialised in different exhibition areas.

These complimentary tours will continue throughout the weekend, with three different sessions scheduled each day.

Moreover, the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) remained open until 8:00 p.m., showcasing exhibitions such as Two that Cross, focusing on the work of Óscar Domínguez, and Sweet Dreams, by Carlos Rivero. The TEA experience is further enhanced on Saturday and Sunday with free guided tours, workshops, and the screening of the film The Farrer Method, by Esther Morente, which will be available for €4.

The Municipal Museum of Fine Arts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife also played a part in the special programming yesterday, extending its hours throughout the weekend until 10:00 p.m. Additionally, it hosted the Plenilunio Romanza Concert, organised by faculty members from the Canary Islands Superior Conservatory of Music as part of the Tenerife Viola Masterclass.

Today, Saturday, Plenilunio Santa Cruz will enter its second day, featuring the majority of the programming across seventeen distinct locations from 11:00 a.m. until midnight. Activities are set to occur in places such as García Sanabria Park, which will host Le Good Wonderland Market, children’s libraries in Plaza del Príncipe and Bulevar, as well as events in MUNA, TEA Tenerife, the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts, Fuerte de Almeyda Regional Military Museum, Palacio de Capitanía, Casa Carnaval, traditional markets at Alameda del Duque Santa Elena and Plaza del Príncipe, along with sporting events along the maritime promenade as part of the Chicharrock festival. There will also be concerts in Plaza de La Candelaria, parades, live performances in restaurant areas, and the traditional late-night opening of the Our Lady of Africa Market.

Highlighted musical performances scheduled for today include artists such as Macaco, Sara Socas, Bejo, El Vega Life, Sistah Vibes, and Lass Suga, who will feature in the programming at both La Candelaria Square and the pedestrian esplanade on Marítima Avenue from 8:00 p.m. in these locations.
