SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 4 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
On Friday, the Canary Coalition (CC) urged the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to initiate “European assistance” to tackle the crisis of unaccompanied foreign minors in the Canary Islands.
Accordingly, the Secretary of Organisation, David Toledo, called on the national Executive to “take measures” while discussions regarding the immigration law reform are ongoing.
Toledo echoed the message from the President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, indicating that the EC possesses additional support to manage the migratory crisis in the Canary Islands, particularly concerning the care of undocumented minors. However, it is Spain’s responsibility to request such assistance.
In this context, the Canarian nationalists’ spokesperson emphasised that “The Canary Islands remain in a dire situation that deteriorates with each day that passes as we await an agreement between the State Government and the principal opposition party, the Popular Party.”
“The Canary Islands require solutions urgently and Brussels is offering assistance while President Pedro Sánchez and Minister Ángel Víctor Torres continue to insist on solidarity from the PP, dismissing help from the European Union,” asserted Toledo.
The national Secretary of Organisation also endorsed “the rigorous work agenda being upheld by the Government led by Fernando Clavijo, which will travel to Morocco next week to seek resolutions and responses for the more than 5,500 children and young people currently in a reception network that is thoroughly overwhelmed and fails to provide adequate care and integration for the minors.”
