Juan Delgado, arguably one of the most cherished councillors in Güímar this century – he has served for 17 years – is stepping down, handing in his resignation next Friday, October 11. Always associated with the primary sector, his hardware shop, and the Canarian struggle, Delgado commenced his political journey under the banner of the PP and concluded it with those of CC, although he has consistently been a neighbour willing to assist his community.
The current mayor responsible for Municipal Works and Services, alongside Cleaning and Waste Collection Services, Gardens, Pest Control, and Cemeteries, will present his resignation during the plenary session on October 11. The session to formally account for his resignation due to retirement is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in the Plenary Hall, with all municipal spokespersons expected to take part.
Juan Delgado has served as a councillor for the Güímar City Council for over 17 years, overseeing departments such as Agriculture, Senior Citizens, the Agache Region, Concessionaire Companies, Social Services, and others to which he was assigned during this term.
During the recent plenary session, Mayor Gustavo Pérez remarked, “on the 11th, Güímar will bid farewell to a remarkable manager and an individual devoted to public service. Juan Delgado has excelled due to both his professional and human attributes, and we are confident that Güímar will express its gratitude for his dedication to the municipality. We encourage all güimareras and güimareros to join him on the 11th in full attendance.”
Reason for breaking the CC-PP agreement
Juan Delgado’s transition to the Canarian Coalition occurred in March 2019, a few months prior to that year’s municipal elections. Subsequently, the mayor of Güímar, Luisa Castro from the PP, declared the dissolution of the agreement with the Canarian Coalition following the inclusion of PP councillor Juan Delgado into the nationalist party.
In an official statement, Castro expressed that due to the “disloyalty displayed” by the first deputy mayor and CC spokesperson in the City Council, Gustavo Pérez, she would be ceasing his responsibilities in the municipal government and terminating the partnership that the two parties had maintained in the municipality since the beginning of this term.
From that point onwards, the PP lost its chance to govern, forming an alliance with CC and the PSOE (2019-2023), which was subsequently repeated in the current term with the assistance of Unidas Sí Podemos.
