SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2nd October (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Auditorium has initiated its theatre programming with the introduction of the ‘La Salita’ space, which will frequently showcase local, national, and international performing arts offerings.
The primary focus of this brand-new initiative centres around text-based theatre, with details revealed this Wednesday by the Island Councillor for Culture of the Cabildo, José Carlos Acha, alongside the artistic director of the Tenerife Auditorium, José Luis Rivero.
The councillor affirmed that it serves as a “space of freedom” for the performing arts.
“This room, which is quite unique and was previously known as Sala Castillo, has already facilitated residencies, Theatre School activities, and a few performances. However, now, thanks to the Auditorio de Tenerife team, it will have its own regular programming, fostering a more dynamic environment for the audience,” explained José Carlos Acha, who believes that “allowing the word to take centre stage was what the Auditorium lacked.”
José Luis Rivero connected this new venture to “the innovation dynamics of the Auditorio de Tenerife” and reflected with the Cabildo, which concluded that “a prominent venue for spoken word was necessary.”
“We yearn for theatre that challenges us, reflecting our society, allowing us to examine ourselves. Therefore, at La Salita, we will feature political theatre with contemporary interpretations and a commitment to social issues, provoking thought and leaving us with a sense that something significant has occurred,” remarked the artistic director.
Beyond the showcasing of performances suitable for diverse audiences – including families and students – ‘La Salita’ will also host various activities like artistic residencies, training, original productions, commissioned works, dramatized readings, and scenic research labs.
This initiative marks a continuation of the efforts established in the Auditorio de Tenerife, focusing on the comprehensive development of the performing arts event across two decades.
This project will kick off on 11th, 12th, and 13th October at 7:30 p.m. with the Argentine production ‘Gaviota’ by Antón Chekhov, directed by Guillermo Cacace.
The following week is exclusively dedicated to the ‘Don Quixote’ secondary school audience with ‘Walking Stories’ by the Mexican company Teatro de la Rendija and Silkateatro Andante.
THE SMOKE SELLER
On 15th and 16th November, ‘The Smoke Seller’ will be staged at ‘La Salita’, a solo performance directed and performed by Joan Font, founder of Comediants, reflecting on his artistic and personal journey while celebrating the company’s 50 years of existence.
Additionally, in November, the company Los Colochos will arrive from Mexico on 28th and 29th with its latest production, ‘Tuta’, inspired by William Shakespeare’s ‘Titus Andronicus’, but adapted to a Mexican prison context.
This new interpretation by Los Colochos will delve into themes of territory, violence, cruelty, and revenge within a refreshed theatrical setting.
In the coming weeks, further details regarding additional performances and artistic residencies that will form part of La Salita’s ongoing performing arts schedule will be updated on the Auditorio de Tenerife website.
