SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1st Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is optimistic that the Government of Spain, the Canary Islands Executive, and the Popular Party will reach an agreement within ten to fifteen days to amend article 35 of the Organic Law on Immigration. This amendment would render the solidarity reception of immigrants obligatory, especially for unaccompanied foreign minors arriving on the islands from other autonomous communities.
In comments to the press following a meeting in Geneva with Philippe Leclerc, the UNHCR Director for Europe, and Octavian Bivol, the UNICEF Deputy Regional Director, Fernando Clavijo noted that it was heartening to have convened a preliminary technical meeting between both government entities and the principal opposition party: “This is encouraging news.”
“Everyone is contributing to effectively manage this situation. We are all engaged in this endeavour, but it is essential that this work is carried out discreetly. We are committed to ensuring that outcomes are as favourable as possible,” expressed the President of the Canary Islands.
Clavijo affirmed that both the Socialist Party and the Popular Party are “not only aware of the issue but also recognise the urgency; now is the moment for them to decide whether they wish to be part of the solution or part of the challenge.” Consequently, he urged that technicians be allowed to proceed with their work to facilitate progress and to finalise an agreement promptly.
Clavijo reiterated that all parties recognise the critical situation currently facing the Canary Islands. This understanding has prompted ongoing meetings, exchanges of information, and the dispatch of documentation. “I believe that efforts will persist, with the acknowledgment that we must ascertain within ten to fifteen days if we can arrive at a consensus,” he stated.
