SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 1st October (EUROPA PRESS) –
The canoe, which was adrift in the vicinity of the island of El Hierro with 60 migrants on board, has been spotted by the Sasemar 103 aircraft approximately nine miles southeast of La Restinga. The Guardamar Calíope has set off to intercept it, according to sources from Maritime Rescue reported to Europa Press.
The fibre canoe is currently stationary, and efforts are underway to restart it so that it can be escorted to the dock; if this is not feasible, a rescue operation will be initiated. The same sources indicate that the sea conditions are poor.
The vessel had been under search since Monday night when one of its occupants dialled 112 to report that they were adrift. Consequently, a rescue operation was mobilised, involving the Menkalinan sea rescue craft and the Helimer 201 helicopter, with additional resources searching for possible survivors of the shipwreck that occurred last weekend.
