SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29 September (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) alongside the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) have coordinated the seminar titled ‘The demographic challenges of the 21st century’, which is scheduled to occur on 3 and 4 October in Tenerife at the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands.
As a special guest, the demographer Massimo Livi Bacci, emeritus professor of Demography at the University of Florence, will deliver the keynote address ‘A country for the elderly, a country for the young’.
This gathering forms part of the ‘CSIC-ISTAC Week on Demography’ and is included within the Demographic Challenges 2023-2025 meetings of the Thematic Research Network in Demography and Population Studies, marking its inaugural session in the Canary Islands.
The seminar will explore the demographic challenge across four critical domains: fertility and family; health, ageing and mortality; migration, and sustainability. The aim of these sessions is to enrich public discourse by showcasing the scientific work undertaken in Demography and Population Studies, and to foster collaborative synergies between institutions, both academic and statistical, promoting the scientific examination of populations from their various perspectives.
Representatives from nearly twenty institutions will participate in this assembly, with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) notable among them, recognised as one of the largest demographic research institutes in Europe and an international beacon in population studies.
Additionally, on 1 and 2 October, also as part of the ‘CSIC-ISTAC Week on Demography’, there will be a training workshop entitled ‘Extreme heat and human health: an emerging problem analysed from a geographical, demographic and epidemiological perspective’ that will take place.
This workshop is primarily directed towards statistical personnel of the Government of the Canary Islands and will occur at the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
These initiatives represent the first joint efforts by CSIC and ISTAC following the agreement of a cooperative protocol last June.
