The restoration efforts on the remnants of the old church of San Agustín, located in the historic centre of La Laguna, have recommenced. Consequently, yesterday, some activity was noticeable in the area, where the work had been halted for approximately a year, pending the completion of the entire administrative process to modify the original project plan. The works resumed yesterday, as confirmed by municipal sources.
It was in January 2022 when the Lagunero Town Council initiated efforts on the ruins of this church. However, the general rise in costs within the construction sector, coupled with the need to implement a series of modifications to align with current regulations, led to a slowdown in progress, which ceased in 2023.
Since that time, we have awaited the entire procedure to be finalised for the approval of the revised project, which, as of last February, had already received the necessary positive assessments from the Cabildo and the Urban Planning Management of La Laguna. Following that, the processes have continued to facilitate the resumption of work. The new budget allocated for the execution of these works amounts to 1,148,588 euros, including IGIC.
The restoration efforts of the ruins will grant citizens access to the site, which has been closed since a fire in 1964 devastated this church, a site which held significant affection among the Laguneros and possessed notable historical and cultural significance.
