SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Vox MP Marta Gómez has declared her resignation from the party and her transition to the non-affiliated group within the Parliament of the Canary Islands, attributed to the lack of initiative from the parliamentary group due to its reliance on national leadership, as well as the narrative of “neglect” towards Canarian society amid the migration crisis.

“I did not join a party to pay respects. I am a very loyal individual, though not servile, and I believe when citizens cast their votes for us, it is to implement policies that truly address their everyday issues,” she remarked in comments to Europa Press.

Gómez, who is departing from the parliamentary group at the same time as a journey to the European Parliament by spokesperson Nicasio Galván to participate in a migration debate, has described Vox as “a hierarchical party” where all initiatives presented to local and regional bodies are issued “under a national directive.”

She also expressed concern over the party’s ‘preoccupation’ with migration initiatives, stating there is a lack of attention to other pressing matters on the islands, emphasising that the situation in the Canary Islands is “not equivalent” to that of Madrid.

She pointed out that the party has lost “visibility,” and specifically in the case of the Canary Islands, it is entirely “depersonalised,” challenging the party’s slogan of “we must comply,” while underlining that although the issue of migration is a “very serious matter,” solutions ought to be sought “together,” without consigning the Canary Islands to its own fate.

Gómez, who has affirmed her intention to complete her term, recalled that she began to promote Vox’s ideology at the end of 2020 because “she genuinely believed in the project,” particularly in policies “centred on individuals and families.”

Nevertheless, since joining the Parliament of the Canary Islands, she has not been able to engage in this advocacy as all political actions must adhere “to the same message, centred on immigration, as everything occurring here is blamed on immigration; that is, if there is poverty it is attributed to immigration, if there are waiting lists for dependency it is due to immigration, if it rains it is because of immigration, and if it is hot it is also blamed on immigration.”

For this reason, she has resolved to pursue various initiatives in a “personal” manner within the Chamber and continue endorsing some of Vox’s proposals “which are quite commendable.”
