Revitalizing Punta del Hidalgo: Repair Work on Wave-Damaged Promenade Underway

The Department of Works and Infrastructure of La Laguna City Council announced yesterday that the restoration work on the Arenisco promenade in Punta del Hidalgo is advancing steadily. Earlier this month, certain sections of the promenade suffered damage due to powerful waves. On the 10th of this month, the local authority sanctioned the emergency contracting of the repair works, which has a total budget of 420,000 euros.

The councillor in charge, Ángel Chinea, stated yesterday that over half of the project has already been completed, and efforts are currently directed towards stabilising and enhancing the surface of the promenade. Indeed, he added, “all tasks related to the seafront work are nearing completion, and the protective breakwater has been successfully installed.”

These renovations have been complicated by the considerable impact that the waves have left on the coastline, eroding part of the land and creating a cavern beneath the promenade itself. Consequently, the emergence of blowholes in the cracks prompted “immediate action to prevent the structure from collapsing and sliding into the sea,” as stated by Ángel Chinea when the action was approved. The promenade has been barricaded to stop foot traffic towards the fishermen’s guild area, owing to the risk of collapse. Additionally, this cavern has formed beneath the sewage collector, posing the added threat of potential pipeline failure, which could lead to sewage spilling into the sea.

This intervention necessitated prior communication with the relevant coastal authorities, including the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge and the Government of the Canary Islands.

The Arenisco promenade was among the topics discussed during last week’s meeting between the city council and the Cabildo’s Tourism department, aiming to evaluate various projects that both bodies are pursuing for the overall enhancement of the municipality’s coastline.

Concerning the specific initiative for the Paseo del Arenisco, both institutions underscored their commitment to expedite these remodelling and environmental adaptation efforts, noting that the project, having been deemed urgent, will considerably reduce its timelines compared to typical execution periods.
