SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Governing Council of the Tenerife Island Council ratified the administrative documentation that greenlights the comprehensive care and development programme for the elderly population on the island, named ‘Islenior’, replacing the prior Ansina programme.
This was revealed at a press conference by Vice President Lope Afonso, who emphasised that it represents a “landmark” achievement of this administration following the discontinuation of the previous initiative “without clear justification” by the former PSOE-CS Government.
He highlighted that the new initiative is the outcome of extensive collaborative efforts with groups and associations, aligning with the principles of “healthy ageing” endorsed by the UN and WHO, focusing on six key areas: well-being promotion, social environment, locality, management, awareness, and information.
Afonso clarified that this programme signifies a “paradigm shift” in the approach to interacting with the elderly by introducing the “senior concept”, eliminating the stereotypes of “old people or wizards” that are sometimes associated with this demographic, which plays a “crucial role” in mentoring younger generations.
He also mentioned that the objective is for the initiative to be “inclusive”, advancing beyond the previous Ansina programme, which had a “more recreational” outlook, by incorporating other facets like mobility, isolation, and services.
