The beach of Las Teresitas, one of the most iconic sites in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is progressing towards its long-anticipated urban transformation. The City Council has revitalised the beachfront development initiative by granting approval for the request to the municipal Environmental Assessment Committee, thus initiating the process of amending the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU).
This advancement, spearheaded by the Urban Planning Department and stemming from a report by Gestur, aims to enhance public amenities at the beach through the establishment of a promenade, an urban park, and leisure areas that incorporate spaces for moderate sports activities. The construction of a hotel is also on the agenda, which would introduce a new draw for tourists in the region.
Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez underscored the significance of this new milestone in realising the future of Las Teresitas. “We are nearing an initial endorsement of a crucial document for the beach front’s development,” he stated. Furthermore, Bermúdez emphasised the necessity of equipping the beach with essential infrastructures such as sewage and lighting—services that have been sought for many years.
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Urban Planning, Zaida González, noted that the collapse of the previous General Plan has not hindered the Las Teresitas project. “We assured that this situation would not stall vital initiatives like this one,” she remarked, alluding to the council’s commitment to advancing the beach’s urban planning.
The objective is that, by the conclusion of this mandate, Las Teresitas will feature a new active planning framework that enables the seamless integration of the sand and swimming areas with the newly proposed recreational and service zones.
