SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 24 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The legislative groups of the Popular Party and the Canary Islands Coalition within the Tenerife Island Council have proposed a motion for discussion at the imminent plenary session, taking place this Friday, urging the Ministry of the Interior to undertake the necessary actions for the inclusion of the agents involved in ‘Operation Ignus’ in the Police Merit Order.
This initiative seeks to acknowledge the professional achievements of the agents who “have significantly enhanced public safety in a complex and lengthy operation, successfully bringing closure to a case that had remained unresolved for years.”
In this context, spokespersons for CC and PP, José Miguel Ruano and Lope Afonso, clarify in a statement that “the precise reason prompting this request is the resolution of the forest fire in Los Realejos, which resulted in the arrest and remand of the suspected arsonist, whose trial was conducted in early July.”
This operation effectively concluded over two decades of recurring fires in the Los Realejos region that had not been addressed until now, they highlight.
The Tenerife Island Council publicly commended the officers and deputies involved in this operation during a ceremony hosted in the main hall of the Island Palace, where their commitment and efforts in resolving this matter received recognition.
The coalition of Popular and nationalist parties reminds us that the detained individual, familiar with the Los Dornajos area where the fire ignited, had prior experience in assisting firefighting initiatives and had been previously accused of similar incidents that transpired in 2007.
During the search of his residence, significant evidence was collected, including the attire he was allegedly wearing at the time, 25 lighters, 25 candles, 113 pieces of rolled paper resembling wicks, two bottles of ethyl alcohol, and a mobile phone.
“Given that the actions of these officers have effectively resolved a dilemma that has compromised the security of the region for decades, we believe their efforts ought to be formally acknowledged through their inclusion in the Police Merit Order,” CC and PP articulate in the motion.
