Yesterday, thousands of individuals witnessed with profound devotion and emotion the embarkation of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes de Roja in the coastal village of El Médano, located in Granadilla de Abona. This event marked the 17th edition of the increasingly popular boat pilgrimage honouring its patron saint.
Following the religious mass and the customary charitable offering, the food from which will be distributed by Caritas Diocesana to the most vulnerable families, the festive procession commenced with the Bailadores del Pinar from El Hierro. It started from the church and proceeded along the main avenue of the village, parading the Marian image until it reached the central beach.
At the beach, amidst great jubilation from the boatmen and a throng of devotees, the Virgen de Roja was ceremoniously taken on board for a maritime procession around the bay. Furthermore, Juan Antonio el Charro delivered an emotional performance on Granadilla beach as part of the event.

The festive occasion wrapped up with a lively party featuring Wamampy, Malibú Band, Maquinaria Band, Tropin, and the group Una hora menos.
On Tuesday, 24th September, the celebration of Our Lady of Mercy of Roja will take place, with a solemn religious service and procession scheduled for 8:30 p.m. in El Médano.
Additionally, on 12th October, the El Médano 2024 Festival Committee will be reviving the El Picacho Festival, a traditional event that has not been observed for many years.
The Festival Committee has also organised a facade decoration competition for the first time, encouraging residents to adorn their balconies and windows, thereby enhancing the splendour of the patron saint festivities in El Médano.
