SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 23 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Canary Islands Government Council has granted permission for a credit transfer of 400,000 euros from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families to establish a new day centre for senior citizens in the Mogán Town Hall.
This forthcoming centre will enhance the services currently available at the Arguineguín facility and aim to better support the elderly populations residing in more isolated locations, including Mogán town, Playa de Mogán, and Veneguera.
Through this initiative, the Department is achieving one of its goals, which is to support financing for investment projects that facilitate the execution of essential works and renovations, in addition to providing the necessary resources to ensure universal accessibility for the elderly, comparable to that of other individuals, in public spaces, processes, goods, products, and services, whether in urban or rural settings, alongside offering integrated social and health care.
Moreover, the Ministry intends to elevate the visibility of the elderly population residing on the islands. To this end, it is actively developing the first comprehensive care programme for the elderly in the Canary Islands. This initiative will enable the creation of a project aimed at enhancing the social perception of ageing, fostering intergenerational solidarity, and promoting an engaging and social approach to active ageing through physical activities.
This legislative term marks the first time the Canary Islands has appointed a dedicated general directorate focused on the elderly population. Over the past 22 years, there has been a significant increase in the population aged 65 and over, growing from 11.6% in 2000 to 17.1% of the island’s residents by 2022.
