The Brieres Estate, situated in Garachico, has been placed on the red list of the association Hispania Nostra, which is committed to the preservation of cultural and natural heritage in Spain. According to the organisation, the structure is in a dire condition following years of neglect and vandalism, and it lacks adequate protection.

Hispania Nostra cautions that this iconic building, constructed in the 17th century, could face being added to a blacklist unless immediate action is taken to safeguard it. This list identifies assets that have been lost or significantly altered in their heritage value. The association remains hopeful that the estate can be preserved and eventually transitioned to the green list, which celebrates restored properties.

This private property, with immense historical value, was established by Flemish merchants and has withstood significant events, such as the volcanic eruption of 1706. Featuring a U-shaped design that opens towards the south, it is notable for its prime location near the sea and for having supported traditional agricultural practices in the area.

At present, over 1,400 properties in Spain appear on the red list, with 26 located in the Canary Islands. Hispania Nostra launched this initiative in 2007 with the aim of raising awareness regarding the deterioration of cultural and natural heritage, enabling society to engage in its defence and safeguarding.

Anyone interested can propose the addition of a property at risk via the Hispania Nostra website or report changes to those already listed on the red list or green list.
