The Socialist Group within the Tenerife Island Council has expressed its discontent this Friday regarding the fact that the primary strategic island initiatives classified as of interest between 2022 and 2023 will not be advanced by the corporation, which “has opted to retract the funding previously allocated in this year’s budget to redirect these funds towards advertising and promotional activities.” This statement was made by the group’s spokesperson, Aarón Afonso, during the plenary session of the Presidency, which took place this Friday. The PSOE emphasises that all of these initiatives had the backing of the current governing body during the relevant plenary meetings.
Among the projects highlighted by the socialists are three key initiatives: the establishment of a green hydrogen facility in the Granadilla de Abona industrial estate, the audiovisual sector hub in Adeje, which was declared of insular interest in June 2023 to enhance value for the film industry; and the development of the port at Puerto de la Cruz.
The financing aimed at advancing all of these projects has been “terminated” in order to reallocate 500,000 euros towards “publishing and communications campaigns” and “efforts to strengthen the communication framework,” as asserted by the PSOE, which points out that the Cabildo de Tenerife and several associated bodies already maintain a communication system that incurs a “considerable” annual cost to the public budget.
The Socialist Group in the Council contends that, despite ongoing criticism of using public funds for political purposes and for promoting the corporation’s president, “vital resources have never been diminished to further prioritise this approach, which fails to serve the interests of the entire populace.”
