SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 20 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The spokesman for the Socialist Parliamentary Group, Sebastián Franquis, stated this Friday that the TSJC’s decision to suspend the protocol for the reception of unaccompanied migrant minors established by the Canary Islands Government represents a “clear failure” of Clavijo’s immigration strategy.
In a statement, he accused the Canary Islands President, Fernando Clavijo, of “overstepping all boundaries” by misusing the fundamental rights of migrant children arriving on the islands.
“The protocol has gone too far, breaching the law and enacting measures that may infringe the fundamental rights of unaccompanied minors arriving on our islands,” he emphasised.
For Franquis, “in his usual tactic of incessant confusion and dispute, Clavijo has crossed every limit. He perceives pressure where there exists legality. The actual issue is that he believes he embodies the Canary Islands and that he is above the law.”
According to Franquis, “the TSJC validates Clavijo’s disinterest in caring for the children and addressing the issue, instead preferring to escalate tensions.”
In this regard, he urged the President of the Canary Islands “to revert to sensible governance that aims to enhance the lives of citizens.”
The socialist representative also pointed out that the protocol was a “unilateral” decision, lacking consensus from the Canary Islands Government, which did not share any details regarding the document with the Government of Spain.
“Thus, it has now been suspended by the courts, and the responsibility to clarify the actions taken lies with the Canary Islands Government,” he remarked.
Franquis further asserted that the PSOE will persist in its efforts and “extend a hand,” just as it did to the Canary Islands Government, to negotiate and advance the amendment of Article 35 of the Immigration Law.
