This weekend, the city transforms into a hub of excitement with a diverse array of concerts, cultural exhibitions, and sporting events catering to all preferences and ages. From renowned musicians to elite sporting contests, the capital of Tenerife consistently provides numerous experiences to savour throughout the city.
What could be a better start to the cultural itinerary than visiting the impressive Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA)? This venue showcases the exhibition “The Smoke of Progress. The La Palma Ship, Its Era and Recovery”, where guests will gain insights into various facets of this vessel through multiple content units. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
From Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd September, between 10:00 and 20:00, the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) will feature the exhibition by Óscar Domínguez titled “Los dos que se cruzan”. This display, dedicated to the surrealist artist, is curated by Isidro Hernández and will remain accessible to the public until 24th November. Additionally, the same venue will host the exhibition “Doble ciego” (Double Blind) by the artist Adrián Alemán, available free of charge on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00.
All weekend long, from 10:00 to 20:00, the TEA will also feature a mini-exhibition titled “Naturalmente”, targeted at children, youngsters, and families. This theme encourages contemplation on the relationship between humans and the natural world, as well as the impact we have had on it.
The Central Municipal Library is showcasing the exhibition “Santa Cruz Spa. 500 Metres from the Beach” until 18 October, from 12:30 to 19:00. This display includes a variety of documents connected to the old Spa, located in the port area of the period, emphasising its social and sporting importance, from 1928, the year its construction was proposed, to 1992, the year it closed its doors.
The Municipal Central Library also highlights the film genre by selecting 28 movies “based on real events” and featuring those that offer a personal and subjective interpretation aligning with their artistic visions. Furthermore, this Friday, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., a workshop for job seekers as part of the Comprehensive Employment Guidance Plans for unemployed individuals in the municipality will be held. Additionally, there will be an activity named “Family Stories” with Antonio Conejo taking place this Friday at the Municipal Central Library from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
The Museum of Nature and Archaeology will display the work “Ethology in Stillness” throughout the weekend, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This installation reflects on the human impact on the planet, set during the confinement period of 2020 due to the pandemic.
Carnival is a constant feature in Santa Cruz. An excellent choice would be to visit the Casa del Carnaval, hosting three exhibitions dedicated to our carnivals. The first, entitled “The Magic Behind the Costume”, focuses on the Costume Competition, showcasing its evolution through two examples: Miguel Ángel Delgado Salas, renowned for his numerous awards in individual costume competition, and the group Los Ilusionistas del Carnaval, representing the group costume competition. It is accessible in the Multipurpose Room from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“Lyric and Tradition” is another exhibition dedicated to the rondallas and lyrical groups, where visitors can explore the history and evolution of these groups, while also viewing some of the fantasies still competing. This exhibition can be found in the Suspi Room alongside the first exhibition.
The districts of El Draguillo and Cueva Bermeja, located in the Suroeste and Anaga areas respectively, celebrate patron saint festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Merced and Nuestra Señora de Loreto this weekend, featuring extensive programmes of activities.
A permanent exhibition titled “2024 Carnival Winners” will showcase the costumes of groups, ensembles, collectives, and queens from the 2024 Carnival, including the outfits of the three Carnival Queens, along with those from murgas, comparsas, and musical and choreographic groups that received awards this year. Additionally, the ‘Pioneers’ Showcase’ has introduced some archival materials belonging to Nicolás Mingorance, a celebrated lyricist of the Afilarmónica Ni Fú Ni Fá, who recently passed away. It is available for viewing on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The plant known as ‘cat’s tail’ and the ramifications from humanity’s relentless resource demands inspire “Invasores”, an exhibition by artist Pilar Boullosa currently exhibited at the Sala de Arte Contemporáneo. This collection comprises several installation pieces, open for viewing Monday to Friday until 30th September from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00.
The art gallery in García Sanabria park in the capital presents the exhibition “Recorridos” (Routes) by artist Pilar Blanco until 25th September. The works featured in this exhibition represent three distinct moments in the artist’s creative journey.
Activities in the Youth District guarantee fun and learning opportunities. On Saturday, an Artificial Intelligence workshop will take place at the Lázaro Siliuto Youth House from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Additionally, another robotics workshop will be organised this Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the TEA Library, allowing participants to explore the fundamentals of mechanics, electronics, and programming. On the same day, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., there will be a guided tour through the heart of Anaga to discover the enchanting nature of Santa Cruz.
In the realm of music and entertainment, the Tenerife Auditorium will showcase “Talaiot Concert A2 by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra” this Friday at 7:30 p.m., presenting a musical voyage through America, cinema, and jazz, led by pianist Marco Mezquida and honorary director of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, Víctor Pablo Pérez. The Guimerá Theatre will feature one of Kike Pérez’s latest solo performances: “Siento Ochenta º”, taking place on Friday at 9:00 p.m.
Starting at 7:00 p.m. on the same day, the MUSA Germany Festival will ignite a celebration of cinema, music, workshops, storytelling, discussions, gatherings, and gastronomy. This annual cultural initiative at MUNA, the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will focus on Germany this year.
Following her Tour Enamórate, Isabel Pantoja will hold a special concert in Tenerife as part of her celebrations marking 50 years of stage performance. This event is scheduled for next Saturday at the Tenerife Fairgrounds, commencing at 8:30 p.m., and will feature two new shows within the same concert, including the poignant song “Marinero de Luces”.
The acclaimed illusionist Jorge Blass will unveil his new show “Flipar” this Saturday and Sunday at the auditorium, starting at 9:00 p.m. This exceptional performance guarantees impossibilities made possible. The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host the Lleides Freestyle Show on Saturday at 9:00 p.m., showcasing top motocross riders.
As part of World Cleanup Day, an initiative will take place on Friday between 8:00 and 16:00 at the coastal town of Tachero in Taganana, involving students from the IES Andrés Bello.
This weekend also features the Canary Islands Absolute Padel Championship at the Palmetum Parking lot. Lastly, this Sunday, the Car-Free Day celebration will occur around Anaga Avenue. Activities will commence at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 1:00 p.m., during which time the avenue will be closed to traffic. In conjunction with European Mobility Week, the popular free workshop “Learn to Ride a Bike” will be conducted by the Tenerife Bike School at the Centro – Ifara district in Plaza Cañaveral, Calle Ramón y Cajal, on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
