SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 19 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, has emphasised this Thursday the “solidarity and comprehension” that King Felipe VI has extended towards the archipelago, as “he has consistently supported the Canarians” during both prosperous and challenging times.
“The King deserves the highest accolade from the Canary Islands Parliament, the honorary accolade from the Parliament of the Canary Islands,” she remarked to journalists following the presentation of the Gold Medal of the Parliament to the monarch.
She recalled that during his decade-long reign, he has participated in over fifty events in the Canary Islands and has been involved in numerous situations, such as the eruption of the ‘Tajogaite’ volcano in La Palma, which is commemorated three years ago this Thursday.
“He has shown great support and sensitivity towards La Palma for an extended period, being concerned about the island’s future and development,” she added.
Pérez jested that the King is “somewhat Canarian” due to his extensive understanding of the islands’ reality, which qualifies him as “one of them”. “He is well-acquainted with the Canary Islands’ situation, evidently stemming from the affection and fondness he holds for the Canarian people,” she stated.
The president also disclosed that this was the first occasion Felipe VI has addressed the Canarian Parliament, as during his last visit when he presented the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, he remained silent.
“Thus, it is an even greater privilege for the Parliament of the Canary Islands that this situation has arisen, which I mention fills me with honour and joy,” she explained.
